I Say Avocado, You Say Abacate! I Say Savory, You Say Sweet!

Avocado Popsicle RecipeFor the last weeks I have been trying to perfect my brigadeiro making skills. Brigadeiro is a sweetened condensed milk and chocolate bonbon that is deceivingly simple to make and requires the same cooking techniques as the beijinho (little coconut kisses). But, I’ve been struggling to get the right quantity of chocolate in my recipe and, because I am a perfectionist, want to get the perfect flavor and consistency of not too runny and not too hard! Since I have been struggling with this simple recipe I decided to deviate a little bit and try something even simpler. I turned my attention to popsicle making and discovered this delicious avocado popsicle recipe.

Brazilians have an amazing assortment of ice-creams. Flavors range from banana, pineapple, passion fruit, and melon to corn, avocado, jabuticaba, doce de leite, guava, and anything else you can imagine. It is always an adventure trying to choose what flavor you want to try next. Each flavor is unique and mouth watering. It is sometimes difficult to try a new flavor because the ones that you have previously tasted are so addictingly good!

Among the many flavors of ice-cream and popsicles in Brazil is avocado. Yes, I did just say AVOCADO! I know, us people from the northern hemisphere associate avocado with savory flavors. But, not here in Brazil, here avocado is eaten sweet. It is made into ice-cream, a smoothie, or eaten as a breakfast ‘yoghurt’!

Avocado Popsicle RecipeSo when my husband first brought up the notion of eating avocado as a sweet I found it rather revolting (I know that he had a similar reaction to eating avocado with salt or in salad, but I will keep that story for another time). Needless to say, I was not convinced that sweetened avocado would be any good and it was sometime before I took the plunge and ate avocado as a sweet. My first experience with sweetened avocado was a popsicle (so, it is very fitting that this is my first post on sweet avocado recipes). The first time I had an avocado popsicle was at the beach and after finishing my first I was ready to have a second…..and need I say anymore? I was hooked. Since then I have become an avid fan of sweet avocado. Ice cream or smoothie, I’ll eat it.

So, here is a simple recipe for avocado popsicles, and you guessed it, sweetened condensed milk is a necessary ingredient.

Avocado Popsicle RecipeIngredients

2 very ripe avocados (for brazilians, 1 large avocado)
150 ml sweetened condensed milk
150ml light cream
Juice of a very small lime or half of a larger lime

1. In a blender, mix the avocado, lime juice, and sweetened condensed milk. Mix for approximately 5 minutes.
2. Transfer to a bowl and incorporate the cream.
3. Pour the mixture into a popsicle mold, cover with aluminium foil, cut a slit in the center and place wooden popsicle stick.
4. Place in the freezer for 2-4 hours

  1. I am exactly like your husband, I had to warm up to guacamole because to me avocado was a sweet, dessert type thing. Now I go either way, enjoy it as a sweet in Brazil (the popsicle is amazing!) and in savory dishes here in the US.

    Try a dessert that my mom used to make for us when we were kids. A median avocado + 1/2 can sweet condensed milk. Put in the blender and help the blender with a spoon because is very thick. Put the cream in ramekins and sprinkle granulated chocolate on top (same as brigadeiro, but as I think is hard to find good ones in Brazil and here, I take some Hershey’s chocolate, put in a processor and make my own). Put in the refrigerator, at least 1 hour before serving. You won’t be able to eat only one:)

  5. It is so interesting to me how culture influences our palate. As a Brazilian, I have always eaten avocado in sweet preparations because it is a fruit. But living in the US for 11 years so far, there is no way that I’d not try to eat avocado in savory preps such as salads and guacamole. In the first 2 years, it was quite hard but I can say that I love guacamole. You pops look creamy and delish. What a coincidence that we had the idea to make a sweet avocado treat.     • It is wonderful to see how culture influences our palate. My husband is still apprehensive about eating avocado in salad and always cringes when I sit down in the morning with half an avocado with salt and pepper on it!

  6. I think that avocados in Brazil are eaten sweet because it is a different kind of avocado from the ones we find in the Northern hemisphere. The ones here (in Brazil) are bigger, creamier, and … sweeter! There are many different kinds of avocados too, but I still haven’t seen the small ones that I used to buy in Canada (which were probably imported from Mexico).

    • Yes Brazilians do eat a different type of avocado. I actually find the Brazilian avocado much less flavorful and watery, therefore they have adopted the sweetened avocado treats. You can fined the small avocado, but it is not easy! High end super markets like Pão de Açucar are likely to carry it!

      • Nothing “high end” over here, only Amazonian fruit galore. 😉
        I have to disagree with the “less flavorful and watery” as all the different types of avocados I have eaten in Brazil so far are much, much more flavorful than the Hass avocado (that’s the name!).

        • There are a lot of people who would disagree with me. Something in me just loves the Hass avocado flavor though (thanks for the name…I new it started with ‘H’…but forgot the rest). I will eat the Brazilian avocado (no idea of the name) but only mixed with other flavors. My taste buds don’t like it on its own!

          • I have tried 2 or 3 different kind of avocados here and already forgotten their names 🙄 I will keep trying until I find one I like, but like you my brain (and tastebuds) have not processed the “sweetness” yet (except for the avocado ice cream! yum!). But if you want to talk about mangoes… THAT is another story!
